Life of the Orphaned
The Philippines is a country that has been torn by economic struggles, constant natural disasters, diseases, poverty, and hunger. The most affected and vulnerable of these hardships are the children. Their fragile young bodies are most susceptible to hunger and diseases that run rampant in this nation, and with so many of them in poverty, very few can actually get the quality of medical help that is necessary to live healthily.
Almost anywhere you go in the Philippines, you will see children on the streets begging for food or money or clothing. However, the image of a child starving in a barren rural area is starting to vanish due to rapid urbanization throughout the world. More and more children can be found begging on city streets, especially in the Filipino capital of Manila. hundreds of thousands of impoverished urban children are growing up in squalor, deprived of education and healthcare. They are often subject to solicitation, harsh labor conditions, and some even to child trafficking.
Armed conflict has also torn the country apart, and it is the same violence that these urban orphans are at risk of getting involved in, whether being exploited to join a gang or other violent group, or they could end up as the victim of these violent conflicts. Since most have no access to education or workforce training, for some, joining such groups seems like the only answer to support themselves or even their siblings.
ORPHANAGES
While many orphanages exist in this country to aid those who cannot fend for themselves, it is simply not enough for the massive need that exists. The government just does not have enough to give to this cause and neither do many of its citizens. Many orphanages that run by donations and volunteers cannot survive on their own, for areas with impoverished children often have impoverished adults as well. Many of these orphanages have very low hygenie and many of the children there are still hungry and more still without proper clothing and care. These orphans need our help. Please, be the hand that lifts them out of this hole.
